Areas of Focus

The Centre for Development and Management (CDM) is an interdisciplinary social research, training, advisory and consulting, project and programme implementation, and information dissemination organization that was established in 1994.  It is focused on addressing issues, challenges and opportunities that are related to: capacity-building of community residents, community institutions and agencies for participatory development; institutional and organizational development; environmental management; and governance, especially in peri-urban settlements and rural communities in the country and region.  The specific areas of concern for CDM include:

·          agriculture, food production and security;

·          appropriate technology and indigenous knowledge systems;

·          community sustainable development;

·          community-based solid waste management;

·          community-based environmental and natural resources planning and management;

·          community infrastructure management;

·          decentralization and governance;

·          education and human resources development;

·          environmental health, water and sanitation;

·          gender and youth;

·          HIV/AIDS, and public and reproductive health;

·          poverty-eradication;

·          primary health care; and

·          small business skills development.

The vision of CDM is to promote social and economic development through social research, training, advisory and consulting services, project and programme implementation, and information dissemination in the country and region. 

 

Mission Statement

The mission of CDM is to provide clients with high quality social research, training, advisory and consulting services, project and programme implementation, and information dissemination that enhance and improve planning, rational decision-making,  policy formulation and accumulation of knowledge.

 

Objectives

1.        To carry out social research surveys; baseline needs-resources and livelihood assessments and situational analyses; project and programme evaluations; social impact assessment studies; market research; household/KAP and public opinion surveys; and policy analysis for problem-solving, decision-making and policy formulation.

 

1.        To conduct training in community development,  management and organization - related  courses that include community participation and empowerment; community management and enterprise development; management of ABOs, CBOs, NGOs and other non-profit organizations; participatory community action planning and management; participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST); organizational and results-oriented management; leadership development; small business skills development; proposal and technical report writing;  public speaking; project planning, implementation and management; conflict resolution; individual,  group and community dynamics for team work and management;   monitoring and evaluation;  and project cycle management (PCM).  

 

2.        To provide advisory and consulting services to  community-based and non-governmental organizations and groups in community and social development;  capacity and institutional strengthening;  and community-based project design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

 

3.        To implement community-based and community-managed projects and programmes to improve livelihoods of households and communities.

 

4.        To disseminate social research findings and information to assist development programmes.

 

CDM works with skilled and experienced associate and independent consultants in order to broaden and strengthen its pool of expertise,  bring the required precise skill to the project and effectively meet a range of  different needs of clients.

 

CDM also collaborates and exchanges information nationally, regionally and internationally with organizations working in development, and social research and training institutions including Universities.
